Minesweeper is a logic puzzle that has been shipped with Windows for decades, which is why so many people know it. The board is a grid of covered squares, some hiding mines. Revealing a square shows a number that counts the mines in the eight squares around it, or opens a region if there are none.
It is a game of deduction rather than luck once the first move is made. Each number is a constraint, and by combining constraints from neighbouring squares you can often prove that a square is safe or mined. Higher difficulties simply use a larger board with a higher density of mines.
