🎓 Writing Tips for Hitting Your Target Length

  • Write first, trim later. Draft freely, then use the counter to cut filler words until you reach your limit.
  • Watch keyword density. If one word dominates the keyword table, you may be repeating yourself. Vary your vocabulary so the text reads naturally.
  • Use reading time for audiences. Blog readers tend to commit to a few minutes at most. Aim your intro and headline at the first 30 seconds.
  • Count characters for snippets. Search engines truncate long titles and descriptions, so keep them short enough to display in full.
  • Clean up pasted text. Use “Remove extra spaces” to strip double spaces and blank lines that pad your count.

How Does a Word Counter Work?

A word counter splits your text into words wherever there is whitespace or punctuation that separates them, then tallies the total. This tool treats contractions such as don’t and hyphenated terms such as well-known as single words, which matches how most word processors count.

Character counts include every letter, number, space and symbol. The “no spaces” figure removes all whitespace, which is useful for platforms that count only visible characters. Sentences are detected by ending punctuation, and paragraphs by blank lines between blocks of text.

Reading time is estimated at about 238 words per minute, a commonly cited average for adult silent reading of non-fiction, and speaking time at about 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations. Treat both as estimates because real speeds vary from person to person.

Search engines show about 150 to 160 characters of a meta description on most results, and may cut off longer ones. Keeping descriptions near 155 characters gives you the best chance of showing the full text.
The Characters figure includes spaces, punctuation and line breaks. The “No spaces” figure leaves out all whitespace so you can compare against platforms that count differently.
